Astana – a place of big opportunities and some words about love and marriage…

Astana is a place of big opportunities. Having moved here I understood how much I missed in Kokshetau. But working at school I realized that young people do not appreciate what they have. I suggested the 9th-graders visiting the USA Embassy, the American corner or something like that and they refused. On the one hand, I understand that they are overloaded with their studies. On the other hand, the life is so short! I watched “the Dead Poets Society” and the motto of the boys there was “carpe diem” which means “Seize the day!”. I agree with the saying because however busy you are, you must find some time to develop yourself beside doing your homework and tidyong your room. You should go to the theatre, to the cinema, and so on, and so forth. Unfortunately, I do not know Astana very well and do not go outside often because I have much work to do. But I try to go to the USA Embassy and the American corner once a week and I was at the theatre after K. Bayseitova sveral times.

On Tuesday I went to the Embassy and we discussed there love and marriage. It is becoming a great problem nowadays. We listened to frank Sinatra’s song where it is said that love and marriage goes together like a horse and a cariiage. Nowadays it is not always like this. more and nore people marry without loving each other. they marry not a person but the money. It is one of the problems. The second problem, to my mind, is that people are to absorbed with their work that they do not have time to date. I often hear people saying that they have to earn a flat, a car, get a well-paid job and only after that they can get married. Of course it is a very sensible way of approaching a amrriage but won’t we miss something very important while chasing after material values???

On Thursday I visited a concert of Shamarr Allen and the Underdawgs. I came home at 10 p.m. and had to sit up till 2. a.m. because I had to plan my lessons but I do not regret it. It was amazing! They “fired’ the audienсу! At first we enjoyed classic jazz, then we danced and shouted and screamed while they were playing rock, hip-hop and jazz mixed together. It was really amazing to listen to this beautiful music in live!

Today I wrote too much in my post)) Just have so much to talk about!

The importance of the photos in our life

Nowadays cameras are considered a necessity rather than a luxury because photos become an inseparable part of our life. Hardly ever an event passes without taking photos.
To my mind, photo is a great invention of the humanity. The photos keep the moments you want to remember: weddings, birthday, graduation ceremony, a party. I believe that photos acquire positive emotions of the event. When you are an old woman you can take a photo and recollect the days when you were young, when your child is grown-up, you take a photo and recollect the days when he/she was a little baby and could do nothing without your help.

It is not the end!

Tomorrow we will get our certificates. I’m happy about it! Now I want to look back and recollect what happened in these 6 months.
I met 10 great people including our teacher Kristina and my group mates. I learnt much from them.
The most important thing that I got here is self-confidence while communicating with foreigners. I overcame the fear of speaking to foreigners thanks to our teacher. Now it is not a problem to me to start speaking. Only a year ago it was a great problem for me to come up to a volunteer and start speaking to him/he, especially to ask some questions! Now after having so many expat-guests in our classroom I understood that they understand me and I understand them. It’s a great achievement!
Secondly, I found that Internet exists not only for writing e-mails and searching for friends, but it is also very useful in teaching and learning English! I know now many useful for me as a teacher URLs!
Thirdly, I learnt much from my group mates because when we presented our research papers I had many questions and I had my group mates answer them. Now when I have a certain problem I know who I can ask.
Fourth, I learnt much about the American culture because before I didn’t have a chance to have an American friend. In these 6 months we had a Christmas party, the day after tomorrow we are going to have St. Patrick’s Day and it’s great! I know now that Americans don’t celebrate the 8th of March, they are not forced to serve in the army, I tasted American cookies, an apple pie, ‘spider drink” (don’t remember its real name).
There were may good things as long with tiredness, nervousness, hard work. I’m grateful that, in spite of too much work and study and tiredness, I had this chance to study here, to meet new friends and to meet such a teacher like Kristina.Though somebody can think it is the end, I don’t think so. It is only the beginning!
I wish good luck to my dear group mates and our teacher!

Change is a challenge

Change Management: A Leadership Perspective By Marielena from CHEVRON, fall 2010
First of all, concerning the ppt I can say that it is not correct. There are too many long and complex sentences, that’s why it is difficult to read it. We were taught to use only keywords in ppt. Secondly, the slides are not eye-catching? Why should I read them? Because it is my assignment? Because the teacher said that it was good for me? Why is it good? The ppt is not impressive at all. Though the idea is great. The above-written questions is the example of what a student can ask when he/she is given a task. So, in my opinion, the 1st thing we must pay attention to is developing critical thinking. We should teach students think about the reason of what they are doing. So, in the nearest future students can ask questions and teachers must be ready to answer them. Unfortunately, the majority of teachers are not ready for these changes. They want students obey them totally.
Second, if we want to change something we should begin with the top. That means, with our administration because however smart and modern teachers are, they can’t do anything without the approval of the boss.
I’ve learnt much from these courses and I hope I will be able to apply the knowledge I got here.
Changes are very important for Kazakhstan but sometimes I think there are too many changes. We don’t cope with them sometimes. For example, every day something changes, something happens in our school. The teachers, as well as students, are overloaded with information. I don’t say that it is bad but everything should be done gradually, step by step that everything will be great!

Cultural differences

Annemarie gave a great speech to us. I liked to learn so many differences between the cultures from her. It was funny when she demonstrated the difference in the distance while talking between Europeans and Kazakhs. Also she talked about the service in our country and in Germany. It a huge problem in our country! The salesmen are rude and impudent as if they do not understand that I can walk 5 meters farther and buy the same thing in another shop. In the conditions of growing business competition they should understand that they can attract the clients by a good service.
It was interesting for me to learn that German is going to be taught at our school and even that it is already taught at Kokshetau School. Even though German is my second foreign language I hardly can speak it because I didn’t have any practice and studied English more willingly than German. But in spite of it I want to get PhD degree in Germany because I know there are Universities with the English language.
The most interesting fact I’ve learnt from her is the influence of the territory on our Kazakh tradition “to be late”. Kazakhs are always late! It irritates me much. I myself hate to be late and try to come in time. I never thought about it from the territorial point of view. According to Annemarie, the reason of this habit is a big territory of Kazakhstan.
There were some questions I wanted to ask about getting PhD in Germany. I know that we can find everything in the Internet but, to my mind, it is better to ask a person who lives there.

Improving 2 languages

I was impressed by Chad and his Kazakh. There are 4 pieces of advice that I got from him:
1) If you go abroad choose home-stay – it is the best way to learn a language. By the way I heard the same advice from Jon Larsen. I think it is important to have native speakers around you so that you HAVE TO learn a language! It is a great motivation.
2) make students create a real-life situation and speak English with someone at home while, for example, drinking tea, as a home work assignment. Nowadays many parents speak English, there are also brothers or sisters who know English but unfortunately they don’t want to speak with their little brothers so that they could improve the language. Some of them don’t do it because they are too lazy and impatient to teach their little brothers and sisters, some of then are too busy to help them.
3) Give each student a glass where you can put a bean for each well-done work. Then at the end of the week we can count them and award the students with the most beans. It is external motivation and can help make students interested in learning. Also it can help improve the discipline.
The last advice he gave is concerned with learning Kazakh language:
4) Speak Kazakh with one another! Don’t be ashamed and don’t laugh at somebody who makes mistakes. It concerns those who knows Kazakh and laugh at those who just try to learn it. It is difficult for me as a Kazakh to learn it because when I try to speak Kazakh, because as a teacher I know the best way to learn a language is practice, everybody around me begin laughing at my poor language. If my language is ridiculous, then teach me! Of course when non-native speaker learns Kazakh everybody praises him/her. That’s why it is difficult for me to learn Kazakh.
In conclusion I suggest you the following picture just for fun:

The ending are of Kazakh origin!

We must know the history even if it is ugly

The trip wasn’t the 1st one for me because I’d been there the previous summer. But this time it was more informative because we had a guide who spoke English and watched the film starring the women who were the prisoners and their children.
The most impressive for me was the letters from the children. Poor children! Just imagining how cruelly they were deprived of the parents, separated from their mothers tears at my heart! I think about my daughter and I’m crying when I don’t see her for much time because of work though I know that she is loved and taken care of and I provide her with whatever she needs.
I think, however depressive, ugly and sad this event was we must know it so that it couldn’t happen any more! For this reason I’d like to take students to such places. But not my students (2 and 3 grades) because they are too small for such a museum. I think it is better to take there students of secondary school beginning with the 6th grades.
To my mind, a possible reason for the parents to object against this trip is the cruelty of the stories and it can effect the children’s state of mind. But I can argue with them. Their children see cruelty every day: while watching TV, while playing computer games. The children are the future of any country. If we want a bright future we must educate the children now so that they know what is good and what is bad.
I like the words of our president: “Even Hitler didn’t kill his people. Only in the USSR the Government killed their own people” just because they were too smart and Stalin was afraid of them!

A lady in the "Stalin's" train

A peasant in the "Stalin's" train

"Fight and Hope"

"Despair and Weakness"

"Arch of Sorrow"

Are there harmless addictions?

Nowadays all the people have addictions. But some of them are harmless and others are very harmful. For example, I am myself addicted to mail agent. It is a chat in mail.ru. I can’t live without it but it takes much time. Sometimes I do nothing, just communicate in the chat. It really bothers me that instead of doing some important and necessary things for me I’m just chatting and can’t help doing it!
As for the children we as teachers can do nothing without the parents’ help. Sometimes when I say to the children what is wrong and what is right (even concerning English grammar) they often tell me: “My mother said to me you were wrong!” And you can do nothing because they believe their parents more than teachers. There was a situation when I showed them a clip about junk food and they didn’t want to hear about it because they love hamburgers and coca-cola! Isn’t it the parents’ fault? The children repeat everything their parents do and we as educators must teach the parents first of all! But the parents often do not have time to speak to us.
I myself think than watching magazines with nude women is not harmful. Let him look at the pictures if he wants to. Then he won’t hurt anybody really if he releases his negative energy with the help of the magazines.
I thought so before Kristina told me “every rapist that is on death row in the U.S. started out with “harmless” looking at pornography. Some men can handle it, like some can handle alcohol. However, there are those people who cannot handle alcohol and end up as alcoholics. There are others that try to get to the next level of thrills with looking at nude ladies in magazines. The next is to find a woman for these guys who are obsessed with naked bodies and they don’t see women as people anymore, they see them as sex objects”.
I am grateful for opening my eyes on this matter. Now I’m really concerned with the problem but I haven’t seen any boys watching such magazines. I think they don’t show their addiction because they know that it is bad. But, you know, there are many things that are prohibited to do. But when our parents say to us that something is bad and we shouldn’t do it, they usually don’t explain why it is bad. That’s why, children break their orders because they do not know why it is bad. They, like me, think it is harmless and the parents just don’t want us to do it because they want to control us. So we must show them the reason of the harm of their addictions. Do you still consider addictions harmless?

Who am I?

It is the most difficult question for the most of people.
Having done the test and read the article about MI I found out the following gradation of my intelligences:
1) Intrapersonal intelligences are at the very top in my chart. At first, I thought that it meant I like to work alone but according to the article it is not like this. It means that I know who I am, what I want and so on. But in the real life I’m always hesitating and in doubts. Even now I don’t know who I am and what is good for me and what is not.
2) Interpersonal I come the second and it is good because I am a teacher and I have to be interpersonal because everyday I have to communicate with many people and find some approaches to the students because all of them are different.
3) The 3rd place is equally divided between logical, linguistic and kinaesthetical.
4) Then come naturalist and spatial intelligences.
5) The last place is occupied by musical intelligences.
I’m not surprised that logical, kinaesthetical, naturalist, spatial and musical intellegencies have the lowest share in my chart because I’m very weak in logic (the causes of some events are a total mystery for me), I dance very badly (it is even difficult for me to walk on a straight line), I have never been interested in the nature (I hate insects!), I easily get lost and it’s difficult for me to find the right way, I don’t have a good voice to sing (though I like music very much). But what surprised me most of all was that linguistic intelligences have low shares! I’ve always thought thought that the thing I can the best is formulating my ideas through a language! It was a shock for me!
